Pellet
The DIII-D pellet injection system consists of the ORNL 3 barrel repeating pneumatic injector, its injection line, and vacuum system. The ORNL pellet injector was originally designed for fueling experiments on JET and was used there from 1987-1992. It was installed on DIII-D in 1995 after barrel size modifications and has been commissioned and employed in fueling studies on DIII-D. The injector uses 3 extruders to provide streams of solid deuterium (or hydrogen, krypton, neon, methane and argon). A solenoid activated punch mechanism cuts pellets out of the extrusion and places them in the barrel for firing by a high pressure helium propellant.
