Description: | DIII-D has demonstrated stable operating conditions similar to the planned baseline scenario for Q=10 operation of ITER. The similarities are in poloidal cross-section, I/aB (q95), and beta_N. The areas of difference where there is the largest concern are applied torque leading to strong rotation (potentially modifies confinement, stability, and LH threshold) and temperature ratio (potentially modifies confinement, but the resulting profiles could also affect stability and heating method could affect LH threshold). There has been confusion in the past between the existence of a stationary solution and access to that solution. It appears that stationary solutions exist in a broad range of beta_N, li, applied torque, and heating scheme, but the access conditions may be more challenging under the ITER conditions. The purpose of this proposal is to explore the access conditions and find the sufficient physics conditions for reaching stationary solutions with low torque and strong electron heating. |
